Kinja'd!!!

First time having a look at our MOT fail Micra. One of the rustiest modern cars I've seen in a while.

I duno if you can make it out from these potato pics but theres almost nothing left of the sills. I was pretty shocked by how bad it actually is. The sill has a vinyl strip over it that makes it look slightly less bad than it is, underneath the vinyl it's just rust flakes.

These are just from one side. I don't know how bad the other side is since it's parked against a wall and I can't be bothered to move it.

My Neon had the exact same thing happen to it. If one side is that far gone, the other is as well. Unfortunately, it's time to say goodbye to that car, because it's definitely not worth fixing. Here in the US, if it were say a truck, you'd just bolt on a new rocker, but little unibody cars aren't even worth it in most cases. It would be a couple thousand USD to repair that, easily far more than the car is worth.

We've already bought it's replacement. We've listed it to see if anyone will give us £150 for it (it has a good engine and gearbox that someone might want it for). If no one is interested we're having it scrapped.

Nowhere near worth fixing as you say. Theres rust in all 4 wheel arches and the hood too.

It drives me crazy that car manufacturers dont galvanize at least the bottoms of cars.

Seriously, it's not that bad. I'd just patch it with fiberglass, rattlecan it, and resubmit it for inspection. Should be good for a few more years. Just drive it into the ground, or at least do some sweet yumps with it.

It's a lot worse than the pics show, plus it failed it's MOT. You have to pass the MOT inspection annually and it's fairly strict, so the car is no longer road legal.

If there was some wasteland nearby I'd engage in some hoonage, but I'd have to drive across town to find anywhere like that. If I got pulled over driving it there would be hefty fines and points on my licence.

I'm so glad I live in a free country. Even once I move to New York, all that they'll check is that the tires have air, the brakes work, lights work, and the horn works.

To be fair I'm kind of glad the rules keep the really sketchy stuff off the roads.

I'd love to see the look on your MOT person's face if they saw Charlie. There's nothing sketchy about it, but it sure looks like it.

The one we use is actually fairly reasonable. Take him a car coated in damage but mechanically and structurally sound it'll get passed.

The micra looked like shit last year; paint missing and dents on every panel, visible rust, but it got passed since the sills were still okayish. Just crossed the line of what they'd accept this year.

It has traditionally been the Achilles heel of the survivability of Japanese vehicles here.

That's still not as bad as my Cutlass.

Your cutlass would have to be more rust than car to be worse than this haha. It's overall a lot worse than the pics show.

I need a new frame rail, I need to patch two fenders, I need to bondo one fender, and I need to replace a bumper. The left side of the rear bumper and fuel tank are not attached to the car by anything other than friction.

All of the fenders are pretty rusty on this too.

Kinja'd!!!

That's one of the cleaner ones.

You should see the rockers on my Crown Vic.

Oh, that's right, you can't see them, because they're not there. Just the plastic trim, some dirt, then a large air gap where there should be rockers, then the pinch weld and the frame.
